Latest Rankings
Posted by Kristina

I have just been emailed a list of Kelley School of Business's latest rankings. As the fall semester (GASP!) rapidly approaches, it is a good time to reflect back over the past year and it is good to see where we stand.

·         KSB-Bloomington was ranked #15 in the world and #15 in the U.S.
·         Among public Schools, KSB-Bloomington is ranked #6 in the world/U.S.
·         KSB-Indianapolis was ranked #56 in the world and #44 in the U.S.
·         When Bloomington and Indianapolis are combined, Kelley ranks #3 in the world/U.S.
·         When Bloomington and Indianapolis are combined, the Kelley School ranks #1 among public business schools .
As always, I am highly impressed by the numbers and it is obvious others find us just as impressive!
As the fall semester approaches, I realize that summer is gone, for the most part, and I have no clue as to where it went! The Kelley School of Business administrative offices were as busy as ever this summer and plan on a successfull and eventful fall semester!

Why Didn't You Tell Me?
Posted by Kristina

I attended a conference and round table discussion focusing on international students, how to relate and the problems and stresses they encounter. One of the topics was “What do you wish someone would have told you before coming over” So I am going to address some of these issues.

1. You will either need a car or have access to one, unless you plan on living and spending all of your time close to campus downtown.
In other countries, like China, a car is not required or even reasonable. Everything is centralized and within walking distance. In Indianapolis, the city is vast and spread out. Most of the time, I-465 is the way to get to other parts of the city. We do not have a transit system or cab system in place, so either the bus (which can be very confusing) or a car is the main mode of transportation. So they wish someone would have told them that you will need to either get a car or find someone who will be willing to share.

2.  Housing, even though it is offered, is hard to come by. Please secure it well before coming over.
This may sound like common sense but what international students don’t realize is that IUPUI is smack dab in the middle of downtown. Housing fills up very quickly and have long waiting lists. We do not have building after building after building of dormitories. Personally, this is why I love IUPUI. It’s small and in the middle of it all. It’s so personal easy to navigate but I can see where it would be frustrating trying to secure housing.

I also want to address something the international students wish WE knew about them when they come over. They are very shy! This is for many reasons. The obvious…they’re in a new country. Some other reasons are their names can be very hard to pronounce and they may (even though they can speak English) have very thick accents. This keeps them from speaking up in class and from trying to make new friends. This affects their happiness here and their grades as class participation can be a factor. So they wanted us to know that they are very shy, almost painfully so. So, they have a hard time talking to and opening up to other students. So please welcome these students with open arms!!

Advice
Posted by Kristina

Everytime I get a new application for the MSA program, I think of the many things I’d like to tell that person to help them prepare for a very grueling 1 – 2 years and of course these thoughts slip my mind until it is too late. So I am going to give you some advice that may or may not help you throughout your MSA journey.
Please get to know the students in all of your classes. You will notice that you recognize many faces as time progresses. Please remember these faces as you will share many classes and projects with these students. Especially for you I-Core students, it is very important to get to know your peers as you will be doing lots of intensive group work. It helps to know these people as it makes your course work easier with more help. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to become friends with people who are going through the same situation and can easily become an ear or a shoulder during this process. It can get very stressful!
By becoming close to your peers, you open many doors that will help guide you. For example, we have several prominent members of the Indianapolis business community in our program and we also have an Indianapolis Colts player to boot! You never know where this may lead. Networking is never a bad thing!
Also, please take full advantage of what the Career Placement Office has to offer. They are a vital asset to the MSA program and the Kelley School as a whole. For example, they hold several events like the Business Etiquette Luncheon. This is important for anyone who needs refreshing on the manners and rules for dining. They also hold mock interviews. This is important for anyone who wants to brush up on their interviewing skills. It will help prepare you for the real thing. They also hold an accounting career fair in the fall. This is VERY important, I repeat VERY IMPORTANT for anyone who will be looking for permanent job placement. You will have the opportunity to meet with several prominent Indianapolis firms. It will give you the advantage over other applicants as you have already met and spoken with your potential interviewer. Please visit http://www.kelley.iupui.edu/cpo/index.cfm for more information.
Also, please stop by our new Kelley website!! It’s brand new and up and running. It’s fantastic!!
In closing, please take the advice I give you to heart. It will help you!

Beginnings
Posted by Kristina

Good morning! And welcome to my first official blog post for the Kelley School of Business. I am here to represent the Master of Science in Accounting program (formally knows as Master of Professional Accountancy).

I think now would be an opportune time to introduce myself to my fellow readers and bloggers! My name is Kristina Snellenberger. I am the program secretary for the MSA program. It is my job to get potential students to apply and I help them through the application process. I also help out with many of the Kelley events like graduation and orientations.

Like many of you, I came to Kelley because of the reputation and the comradarie of the staff and faculty. You couldn't ask for a better organization to work for and to get an education from. I also have to thank Susan Cauble for rescuing me and bringing me on board! It has been, literally, the most joyful and entertaining job experience of my career and I plan on becoming a permanent fixture in the Kelley School of Business.

I get to talk to so many students on a daily basis and I love it! We have students from all over the country and the world and it is a joy to talk to so many different types of people. It is also very interesting to hear about the different cultures and the different ways of living. It's different from state to state but can you imagine how different it is in another country? I love hearing about the culture difference and I love seeing the neat items that are brought back from other countries. Did you know that in China you can get meat flavored cookies? Hmmm... Or that most people in China don't own cars because everything is within walking distance? It's a little different in Indy where everything is scattered about!

It must be so difficult to come over here to a completely different world where you don't know anyone and in some cases have never driven a car or spoken a word of English. I attended an international seminiar that was hosted by students from several different countries and I had the opportunity to hear what they liked, disliked and what frustrated them about moving over here. It was enlightening and very informative.

I suggest anybody who has the opportunity to learn more about where your fellow students and staff are from, to do it. Learn as much as you can! Knowledge is power. That's why you're here, right?

The one thing I want to incorporate in my blog is a question. I'm going to ask a simple question of my readers and I'd love to hear some of your feedback. My question today is: why did you come to Kelley School of Business?
