Since her days studying economics in Bloomington in the early 1950s, Elizabeth (Betty) Magner has had ties to Indiana University. By funding two scholarships at Kelley Indianapolis – one each in the memory of her father and for her husband – Mrs. Magner works to ensure other students develop similar ties – and attain an education to last a lifetime.

“One of the things in life that can't be taken away from us is our education,” says Mrs. Magner. “That's why we must continue to promote it.

The Lawrence E. Magner Prize in Human Resource Management, funded in September 2007, honors the life and career of Mrs. Magner's husband, who spent nearly 30 years in positions of increasing responsibility in the personnel departments of several companies in Chicago, North Carolina and other locations. Although the Magners met while attending college in Bloomington and both graduated from IUB, she decided to establish the scholarship in Indianapolis.

“Larry's college career wasn't one of the typical college student who went to school for four years. He worked, went to school, spent four years in the Navy and then returned to IU before he graduated,” Mrs. Magner explains. “It just seemed to make sense to help students whose educational path was similar to Larry's.”

“You can do so much with a little amount of money,” says Mrs. Magner, who started her father's scholarship with the proceeds from a small life insurance policy plus matching funds from her husband's company. “If I were to speak to graduates who say they'd like to give something back, I'd tell them that if each one saved at least a dollar a week each year and combined their monies, they could build a tremendous scholarship fund at the Indianapolis campus.”

Mrs. Magner is very pleased with the way the Indiana University Foundation has maximized the initial contribution to the fund established for her father, William F. Buchanan. It has grown substantially and has paid out sizeable scholarships each year since 1984. She says her family's scholarships are proof that a great deal can be accomplished with very little investment.
